Joshua’s work has earned him high-profile recognition from the likes of Esquire Magazine’s Genius Issue, where he was named “Best and Brightest,” and NBC, which praised him as an “Astrophysicist turned new media whiz.” Both Forbes and ABC News have also acknowledged his accomplishments, praising his work as a rocket scientist. Joshua also writes a column for Inc. Although his passions are dramatically diverse, Joshua’s dedication to excellence in them all has established him as a thought leader in fields that include science, invention, entrepreneurship, art, leadership, coaching, and education.
Joshua holds five Ivy League degrees, including both a PhD and MBA from Columbia University, where he was fortunate enough to study directly under a Nobel Laureate. Josh provided critical resource in a multi-billion dollar, decade-long mission led by the European Space Agency in conjunction with NASA to build an X-ray observational satellite to orbit the planet. He holds six patents. Joshua co-founded Submedia, which brought to market on of his inventions - a technology to display motion pictures for subway riders to enjoy between stations, thereby pioneering the field of commercial in-tunnel media. The company has grown globally and installed displays across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
As one of the only people in the world to visit North Korea multiple times, Joshua has also been published as an expert on North Korean strategy and lectured on the topic domestically, for Columbia University, and abroad, in both South Korea and China.
Joshua Spodek remains highly invested in education. He co-founded and helped lead a number of education-centric projects, and managed a partnership with New York City Public Schools. Inside the classroom, he has served as a professor at Parsons School of Design and NYU-Tisch’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). Fascinated to find that business schools educate their students on leadership - a skillset so seemingly abstract that many assume it to be unteachable - Joshua threw himself wholeheartedly into learning all he could. He has since become a leadership and executive coach for Columbia Business School’s Program on Social Intelligence, as well as accepted private coaching clients.
Beyond his educational career, Joshua Spodek is a successful artist. He has shown large public art installations in New York City’s Bryant Park and Union Square and Amsterdam’s Dam Square. He has had solo shows in New York City, as well as been featured in group shows across the country, including Art Basel in Miami and for MTV. Joshua’s work won an Obie Award for Design Excellence and reached the semifinals in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.
Joshua is also a serious athlete. He has completed six marathons (3:51 is his best time - so far!) and competed at the World and National level of Ultimate Frisbee (with teams ranked #5 at College Nationals, #8 at Club Nationals, and #11 at Worlds), including participation in the first Ultimate Tournament in Pyongyang, North Korea.
In his spare time, Joshua Spodek has swum across the Hudson River, done over 70,000 burpees, written more than two thousand blog posts, taken over one hundred cold showers, coined the term SIDCHA, and jumped out of two airplanes. He has spent time in 26 countries on six continents, including years in Paris, Ahmedabad (India), and Shanghai. Joshua currently lives in New York City’s Greenwich Village and blogs daily.
